Environment, Health and Safety Policy
Bedayati Nursery believes that the health and safety of children is of paramount. We make our setting a safe and healthy place for children, parents, staff and volunteers.
Health and safety policy is not only important for children, families and staff but is equally important for every person that enters the premises.
Bedayati Nursery will:
- Provide and/or maintain equipment and systems of work that are safe and without risk to health.
- Ensue that equipment and substance are used, stored and transported safely without risk to health.
- Provide information, instruction, and supervision to ensure health and safety of employees.
- Ensure the health and safety of visitors to the workplace.
- Maintain safe places of work, including entrances and exits.
Bedayati Nursery staff must:
- Cooperate with their employer’s attempt to meet the above legal responsibilities in matter of health, safety and welfare, by following instructions, undertaking training etc.
- Take care of the health and safety of others.
- Not misuse equipment or substances provided for the health, satfety and welfare of others.
- A safety check of the premises will be completed regularly, and register will be
- Any hazard identified will be recorded and will be remedied as soon as possible.
- Each month a staff will be appointed to complete a safety check of the entire
workplace. This staff member will identify any unsafe practices or hazards and
report them at the staff meeting. A solution will be applied as soon as possible.
Emergency Procedures and Drills
- Staff, children and visitors will be required to participate in emergency
evacuation procedures and drills in accordance with the emergency evacuation
- Drills be recorded and evaluated by staff.

Recording Accidents, Injury and Illness
- Children’s accidents forms will be completed whenever there is an incident in
accordance with the incident/accident policy and kept in child’s medical file.
- Staff accidents forms are located in the office and will include information such
as location of the accident, cause of the accident, first aid treatment given, type of
injury and if any medical treatment is required.
➢ Any chemicals or agents deemed to be hazardous due to the potential to cause
sickness or injury will be stored properly.
➢ Any chemicals not being used will be disposed.
Windows – Windows above the ground floor are secured so that children cannot climb
Doors – We take precautions to prevent children’s fingers from being trapped in the
doors. We have safety covers installed in all door hinges.
Floors – All surfaces are checked daily to ensure they are clean and not uneven or
Kitchen – Children do not have unsupervised access to the kitchen. All surfaces are
clean and non-porous. Cleaning materials and other dangerous materials are stored out
of children’s reach. When children take part in cooking activities, they are supervised at
all times and are kept away from hot surfaces and hot water.
Electrical/gas equipment – All electrical/gas equipment conforms to safety
requirements and is checked regularly. Fires, heaters, electric sockets and wires are
properly guarded and the children are taught not to touch them. There are sufficient
sockets to prevent overloading. Lighting and ventilation is adequate in all areas
including storage areas.
Storage – All resources and materials from which children select are stored safely. All
equipment and resources are stored or stacked safely to prevent them accidentally
falling or collapsing.
Outdoor area – Any outdoor area that is used by the children is securely fenced. Our
outdoor area is checked for safety and cleared of rubbish before it is used. All outdoor
activities are supervised at all times.
Hygiene – Our daily routines encourage the children to learn about personal hygiene.
We have a daily cleaning routine for the setting. We clean resources and equipment,
dressing-up clothes and furnishings regularly. The toilet area has a high standard of
hygiene including hand washing and drying facilities and the disposal of nappies.
We implement good hygiene practices by cleaning tables between activities, checking
toilets regularly, wearing protective clothing – such as aprons and disposable gloves – as
appropriate, providing sets of clean clothes and providing tissues.
Activities – Equipment and resources are checked to ensure that they are safe for the
ages and stages of the children currently attending the setting. The layout of play
equipment allows adults and children to move safely and freely between activities. All
equipment is regularly checked for cleanliness and safety and any dangerous items are
repaired or discarded. All materials – including paint and glue – are non-toxic and is
clean and suitable for children’s play. Physical play is constantly supervised and
children are taught to handle and store tools safely. Children learn about health, safety
and personal hygiene through the activities we provide and the routines we follow.
Food and drink – Adults do not carry hot drinks through the play area(s) and do not
place hot drinks within reach of children. Snack and meal times are appropriately
supervised and children do not walk about with food and drinks. We operate systems to
ensure that children do not have access to food/drinks to which they are allergic.
